Counting each variant separately toward a tier

By default, a Bundlex discount counts every variant of a product together. Three shirts qualify for a "Buy 3" tier whether they are three black shirts or one black and two white. Count each variant separately changes that: each variant has to reach the tier on its own.

This is the right setting when your variants are effectively different products, like flavors of a supplement or scents of a candle, and a "3-pack" only makes sense as three of the same thing. It's the wrong setting for a store where customers deliberately mix sizes or colors.

This setting changes what customers are charged, not just what they see. Read the trade-off below before turning it on.

Where to find it

  1. Open the bundle you want to edit.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab.
  3. Tick Count each variant separately in the Advanced settings list.

What changes

Take a "Buy 3, save 15%" offer on a shirt that comes in black and white.

So the setting can move in either direction. Mixed carts can lose a discount they used to get, and carts with several qualifying variants can earn more than one discount at once.

The case that surprises merchants

The first row is the one to think hardest about. A customer who adds one of each color and expects a 3-pack price gets charged full price instead, with no explanation at checkout. If your customers routinely mix variants, leave this setting off.

Settings you can't combine it with

Bundlex blocks the save if the bundle also uses any of these, because the counting rule and these features contradict each other:

  • Per-item variant pickers (letting the customer choose a variant for each item in the offer). Turn the variant picker off to use this setting.
  • Progressive gifts. Turn progressive gifts off to use this setting.
  • Gift selectors on any offer. Remove them to use this setting.

The editor tells you which one is in the way when you tick the box.

Quantity selectors switch off too

While this setting is active, the quantity stepper is disabled. A stepper builds a mixed-variant quantity in one click, which could show customers a tier that none of the individual variants actually reaches.

Offer types that keep counting together

The separate counting applies to straightforward quantity offers. These keep pooling variants the way they always did, even with the setting on:

  • Product bundles and Buy X Get Y (BOGO) offers.
  • Any offer carrying cross-sells, free gifts, or upsells.

Only offers that use a percentage, a fixed amount per item, or an exact price, with no extras attached, are counted per variant. This keeps a gift or a BOGO from changing meaning just because the setting is on.

Using it with "Limit discount to offer quantity"

The two settings do different jobs and work fine together:

  • Count each variant separately decides which items are counted as one group.
  • Limit discount to offer quantity decides how many items inside a group actually get discounted.

With both on, the quantity cap is applied inside each variant's group. A cart of 5 black and 5 white against a "Buy 3, save 15%" offer discounts 3 black and 3 white, leaving 2 of each at full price.

Before you turn it on

  • Check whether your customers actually mix variants. Your order history is the fastest way to tell.
  • Make sure your offer copy matches. If the widget says "Buy any 3 and save", customers mixing colors will expect a discount they won't get. Reword it to something like "Buy 3 of the same".
  • Place a test order with mixed variants and confirm the checkout total is what you intend.
