Create targeted upsell offers
Targeted offers let you choose which products to suggest based on what is already in the cart. Use them for product pairings, collection-based offers, or offers that appear above or below a cart value.
Create a targeted offer
- Edit your cart and open Cart > Upsells. Turn on the block.
- Set Product source to Targeted offers.
- Start with Pair products, Match a collection, or Offer by cart value.
- Complete Show this offer when and choose your Products to suggest.
- Choose whether All of them or Any of them must match under Conditions to meet.
- Click Done, turn the completed offer on with Active, and save the cart. Activate the design if it is not already active.
Starter examples create inactive drafts. An incomplete offer cannot be enabled. Done closes the offer editor; you still need to save the cart to publish your changes.
What each condition checks
- Product in cart: checks for any variant of the products you select. For example, a toothbrush can trigger an offer for replacement heads.
- Collection in cart: checks whether cart products belong to your selected collections. It does not choose the suggested products from those collections; select the products to suggest separately.
- Cart value: checks the subtotal after discounts, excluding free gifts. Items accepted from this offer do not count toward keeping its own value condition satisfied. Enter the threshold in your store currency; it is converted for shoppers using another currency.
Product and collection conditions support contains any of, contains all of, and contains none of. Cart value supports is at least and is under.
Order, limits, and fallback
You can create up to 8 offers, each with up to 6 conditions and 12 suggested products. Offers are checked from top to bottom. Matching lists are combined in that order, and a repeated product appears only once. The block's Maximum products setting limits the final list.
Products already in the cart, unavailable products, and the managed add-on product are excluded. Under When no offer matches, choose Show nothing, Show complementary products, or Show related products. This fallback runs only when the rules leave no products to display; it does not fill spare spaces in a shorter list.
A complementary fallback needs pairings in Shopify Search & Discovery. Unlike the regular Shopify recommendations source, this fallback does not switch to related products when no complementary products are returned.
Test why products appear
Use Why these offers beneath the preview to see matched conditions, excluded products, and fallback use. If collection membership is unknown, the preview reports that instead of claiming a match. Save and test with real products on your storefront as well.
Offers are checked again when the cart changes. If a rule stops matching, its card disappears, but a product the shopper already added is not removed for that reason. The separate Remove upsells when the cart empties setting still applies.
What targeted offers do not change
Targeted offers work in the main Upsells block. Side upsell and Empty cart keep their own product sources. Suggested products use their normal storefront prices; a rule does not create a discount or add a product automatically. Customer-tag visibility still controls whether the whole Upsells block appears.
For other sources, see product upsells. If an offer is missing, see upsells not showing.
